AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Today I have a question regarding Indian Folk Art🖼️. I have no formal education on art but right from my childhood days besides academic studies I always loved to pursue both art as well as craft. After my marriage I travelled to many places & got the opportunity to attend many workshops on various kinds of art. At a later stage in my life I got interested in Indian Folk Art tradition & at present learning Madhubani or Mithila folk art online . But I am a bit confused which one to pursue in the long run ..Indian Folk art or Fine art? As in the Indian Folk art the stories are based on Gods & Goddesses, I would like to know is it advisable to paint the pictures of old traditions or shall we move forward with fine art. All  the Mother’s paintings are fine art so would love to know is there any writing of Sri Aurobindo on the Indian Folk Art? Please tell me your take on this also.

Folk art carries its own charm. But if you ask me from the personal progress point of view then fine arts is certainly better. Aesthetics and creativity are among the most important elements of Art. Folk art can be limiting that way. It is beauty within certain fixed boundaries of tradition. Fine art helps explore deeper.

You will find about differnt aspects of Art in Sri Aurobindo’s Rennaisance in India as well as several places in the Mother’s writings.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
