One need not anticipate difficulties but yes one should be prepared for that. Some of the qualities that help most are wideness and plasticity, an ability to adapt to changing situations. Human beings have a tremendous capacity to adapt provided we can control the thought formations that suggests otherwise. Best is to be focused on the moment rather than thinking all kinds of possible difficulties.
A,second practice is to learn to step back and be a witness knowing that everything is temporary and transient that will pass away. This inner detachment is a great help. One discerns and sees that nothing in life, no situation, good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant is permanent. With this awareness one can take the next step of turning towards That which arouses in our mind and heart the sense of the Permanent, – the Divine in whatever way we can conceive.
A fundamental practice is to cultivate inner Peace and equanimity. The first step is endurance. Use the smallest most trivial events as opportunity to cultivate these things especially when some want or wish is denied. One begins with the practice of moderation and consciously cultivates peace and patience.
Finally but most importantly cultivate faith in the Divine and make Him your all-time all-weather friend which indeed He is.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
