Likes and dislikes are part of our nature and help us in making some preliminary choices. But these choices might be misleading since they are based on certain habits and conditioning. Hence, they must pass through the scrutiny of the reason and discerning intellect to see if what is being suggested by the mind and senses is also good. We like certain foods or lifestyle for example, but it may not be good for us. Or we may like something and it is good, but we may be indulging excessively. The reason will help us observe balance and moderation in our likes and dislikes, too. This practice makes us conscious and prepares us for the true spiritual life in which one has completely risen above likes and dislikes and practices inner equanimity in all we do and receive from life. All must be received as a gift of Grace, whether it seems pleasant or painful.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
