In general, there were very few people during the Relics installation. It could be because the devotional aspect is largely missing in Auroville. One reason for this is the wrong association of devotion with religion, especially in the Western World. Though Sri Aurobindo and The Mother have spoken so much about the importance of true bhakti, love and surrender, many people, especially those who have not read much or cared to open the psychic door, still take an intellectual and philosophical or at most working ‘to build a city with a different ideal’. So, possibly they take an event like the Relics installation or visiting the Shrine of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother as akin to a religious feeling. It is equally true of the neo-intellectual breed in Pondicherry as well. I can only say, ‘they know not what they miss’.Β
But that apart, perhaps the news was circulated rather late. I myself came to know just the day before, looking at the global spiritual summit perchance. I just couldn’t resist the temptation, especially being actively involved in the Relics installation in a few centres. It is a very intense and special moment, and I only hope that people in Auroville realise its significance and understand what it means. Hopefully they will be given the close attention and care they that is due and the impact of this event will be felt palpably in weeks and months to come. In any case, it is a great privilege for those living in Auroville. Let us hope people understand its immense importance.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
