AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

I have a weak left knee. I tend to sit on a stool and meditate. Someone told me that sitting cross-legged was more spiritual and that I should try to sit cross-legged on the floor. They added that sitting cross-legged is better yogically and that it also prevents arthritis. Is this correct? πŸ˜₯πŸ¦΅πŸΌπŸ§˜πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

Whatever be the merits of sitting cross-legged from the physical point of view, its spiritual benefits are doubtful. Sri Aurobindo and the Mother never advised it. Meditation is primarily an inner process and the best posture is that in which you can forget about the body. I have seen Champaklal ji meditate in Sri Aurobindo’s room, sitting on a chair. Pavitra da recommended the same. Sri Aurobindo meditated while walking. He even said that one could meditate while lying down, but the only problem is that in most people it induces sleep.Β

The only merit behind cross-legged sitting is the smooth circulation of Prana and perhaps that is why some meditations where a preliminary Pranayam is required, it may be helpful, not for meditation as such, but for the pranic energy. In Sri Aurobindo’s yoga, the process is different and the cleansing of Prana is not done through mechanical means but by opening to the Mother’s Force.Β

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Alok da, I have a cousin sister who cries all day long. I don’t know why, but today she cried 3 times, yesterday 4. Why is this happening, and how should I tackle it? But it is not your fault if she is crying. May be you can try to make her quiet by sharing your toys or simply taking to her or diverting her mind. But in any case you can’t be held responsible if she is crying unless it was due to …
