If we accept the view of Sanatana Dharma as well as Sri Aurobindo’s own experience, this seeming Void, teeming with possibilities is very much present in each element of creation waiting for its hour to manifest. It is in fact the secret determining factor, the determinate whose presence ensures that things eventually move towards a certain final divine outcome through the play of Time and Space. This absolute determining factor, this Divine Omnipotence and Omniscience, this Transcendent that exceeds the individual and the cosmos, is the Supermind. It is beyond the Immutable Brahman of the Vedantin as well as the Nirvanic Silence of the Buddhist. Sri Aurobindo describes it in the Essays on the Gita. The Supreme is not cut off from the world. Nothing would exist without His secret support. The link however is to be found in the Divine Shakti, the Divine Mother, who joins creation with the Supreme. It is because the traditional understanding of Vedanta stops with Maya and the Immutable Brahman that it is unable to see the link which is held in the Paraprakriti. It is because of the division between the Supreme and His Shakti that a seemingly unbridgable gap has been cut off between the World and God. But just as the leaves of a tree are not cut off from the seed and the seed is not cut off from the Unseen Power of determination held within it so too the Transcendent Unmanifest Supreme, the cosmic Tree and each particle of creation are a single Reality. Sri Aurobindo reveals this at several places.
‘The soul is a figure of the Unmanifest,
The mind labours to think the Unthinkable,
The life to call the Immortal into birth,
The body to enshrine the Illimitable.
The world is not cut off from Truth and God.’
Savitri.
Affectionately,
