AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

My brother has been working in Bangalore for 10 years. He has a wife and 2 children. Recently, he lost money in an online game upto 15 lakhs. He lived life luxuriously. So he took a loan from the bank and outsiders upto 26 lakhs. 😫💰[…]

Now we paid upto 15 lakhs, 11 lakhs balance is there. Now all his salary went to paying interest only.  Now he is unable to manage. So he is asking us to clear the debt; if not, he will commit suicide. If we paid his debt, we would lose our savings. What to do?

Online gaming, especially involving money, is a serious addiction. It is a psychological condition that needs treatment. Paying the debts that he incurred is not a solution. Nor is it desirable. Those who trusted him with money should have given due thought to it. Those near him should have taken steps in time to prevent it. By paying off the loans, one is only strengthening the tendency. The suicide threat is because online gaming puts one in contact with very dark, hostile forces. No doubt the risk is there since he has opened himself to these hostile forces. But the way to go about it is to ask him to take treatment. It will also help him later should someone decide to take a legal action.

In any case, he does not have any moral right over what you have earned with your efforts. Nor are you socially obliged to keep giving cover to an errant way of life. At most, you can help him by taking him to a psychiatrist (Nimhans is right there) and getting him treated. Your responsibility, if any, ends there.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Yes, why not. Two people can have the same spiritual path as we see in the stories of Rishis and their partners. But then those days there was no such mushrooming of sects and religions as we find today. So now, if one has …

Every now and then, tamas overpowers the mind, triggering a downward whirlwind of mental state. Sometimes I wait it out, letting the tamasic state pass on its own; other times, I put too much pressure on my mind to snap out of it. 😪😓🦋[…]

One must not succumb to tamas. If allowed it overpowers more and more. Day is meant for work and one should keep oneself occupied with some meaningful activity or the other. Half an hour or 45 minutes of afternoon rest is …
