AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Regarding the Mother’s prayer dated July 21, 1914: Dear Alok Bhai, is the experience she describes related to the awakening of the Kundalini, or is it something distinct—perhaps a far higher or more expansive experience?🐍🔥☀️

This is the prayer

’21st July 1914

There was no longer any body, no longer any sensation; only a column of light was there, rising from where the base of the body normally is to where usually is the head, to form there a disk of light like that of the moon; then from there the column continued to rise very far above the head, opening out into an immense sun, dazzling and multicoloured, whence a rain of golden light fell covering all the earth.

Then slowly the column of light came down again forming an oval of living light, awakening and setting into movement—each one in a special way, according to a particular vibratory mode—the centres above the head, in the head, the throat, the heart, in the middle of the stomach, at the base of the spine and still farther down. At the level of the knees, the ascending and descending currents joined and the circulation thus went on uninterruptedly, enveloping the whole being in an immense oval of living light.

Then slowly the consciousness came down again, stage by stage, halting in each world, until the body-consciousness returned. The recovery of the body-consciousness was, if the memory is correct, the ninth stage. At that moment the body was still quite stiff and immobile.’

Even a quick reading would reveal that the experience is much more. The Mother already had the experience of Kundalini before meeting Sri Aurobindo after reading a book on Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda.

Here, in the above experience we see the rising of the shaft of Light from the base of the body to the head where it joins with the spiritual mind of which the moon is the symbol. This part corresponds to the Kundalini. But then, the Energy rises beyond, far beyond towards the solar, the supramental Light as is clear by the description of the golden rain and the rainbow colours. It is the origin of creation itself.

Then there is the experience of descent which is again unique to this Yoga. What is another interesting detail is that there are nine and not seven centres. It is so because the ascension goes beyond the 7 traditional centres and again during the descent goes below the base of the spine joining the Superconscient with the Inconscient. It is an experience of descent unique to this yoga which acts as the power of transformation.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Sir, Sri Aurobindo talks about the descent of peace, light, force while doing above-head concentration. he also speaks about higher planes of consciousness, e.g., higher mind, intuitive mind, etc., and the ascent of consciousness into these planes. What is the correlation between these two explanations? 😊🙏🏻🌀🌸

Ascent means that the consciousness begins to operate in a new mode. It is somewhat like a child going from school into graduation wherein he understands the same subject differently. Thus with each ascent there comes a new way of looking at everything, a new and higher mode of operating. …
