There are two operating systems within us. When we are struggling in the Ignorance of earth-nature, we are given the ego as a defense against the universe. Its business is to form, develop and preserve our temporary individuality, like the outer boundary wall or the scaffolding of the house. It is a defense against the immense cosmic forces.
But a time comes when we are ready for the psychic being, the actual governor and the owner, the Divine. Until then the ego has to serve as the provisional Manager. It is during this phase when the psychic being has not yet emerged that the ego has a role to play, one of which is a just self-defence. When the psychic being emerges that one has a spontaneous direct access to the Divine and His Grace and Protection become quickly active. But until then, in the ordinary life so to say, one has to act by the ignorant ego and its defense mechanisms that caution us against the intrusion and invasion of the world forces, especially through human instruments, that may be inimical to us. Sensitivity has other uses too in the life of ignorance. It plays the role of hammer and chisel to shape our personality when we are struggling in ignorance.
