AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Dada, Is it correct to feel deep empathy—a sense of compassion towards others—and to perceive no distinction between oneself and other living beings? If so, what exactly constitutes Nishkam Karma (selfless action)? And if one’s sensitivity is so profound, how is it possible to attain detachment?💓💧🤲🕯️

Pranam dada, samvedana, dusro ke prati karunaa ka bhav aana, apne me aur dusre jeev me koi fark mehsoos naa hona ye sahi hain kya? To fir nishkaam karm kya hain , samvedanshilta itni adhik ho to detachment kaise ho?

Samvedansheelta (sensitive to the pain of others) is of two kinds. In ignorance we feel the pain of others but neither know the real causes nor the true cure. Sensitivity makes us aware, sometimes acutely so, of our own pain and of others. At best we can offer some outer help and some comforting words. These things act as temporary balms and have their own usefulness but, as we all know, it is not enough. To address the real causes and go to the true remedy we must go to the root of the problem. It is here that the true spiritual life steps in. But to acquire true knowledge and true power to help one needs to first practice inner detachment from one’s own ego reactions, discover and apply the remedy first within oneself, and then turn towards the world to heal. Imagine a person who wants to relieve someone of the pain but knows neither the cause nor the cure. He must first learn Medicine and practice its application which may even include administering bitter medicines and painful injections for the proper cure. So too we must first gain true knowledge and acquire the true power to heal before we help others.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
