AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

I also see that Sri Aurobindo had written about the Vedic Gods and mantras as well. Sometimes when my mind is agitated and concentration on the Mother at the heart could be a challenge, or it takes a while for the mind to settle down to have effective concentration, I wonder if I could use some mantras to bring my mind to a focus. I would rather utilize mantra(s) that bind me to Mother and Sri Aurobindo. Have they approved of any mantra(s) to be used as part of the sadhana? are they to be chanted, or listened to? If so, kindly guide me on how to use and practice them? πŸ”±πŸ‘ΌπŸ§šπŸ•‰οΈπŸ“Ώ

There are quite a few mantras they gave on different occasions to different sadhaks. Sri Aurobindo gave The Mother’s mantra:

‘Om Anandamayee Chaitanyamayee Satyamayee Parame.’

The Mother’s mantra was:

‘Om namo Bhagavatey’

They generally adviced that the mantra should be preferably short and one that evokes the Divine Presence for you. The shortest and simplest are the names of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Here is a letter of Sri Aurobindo revealing this truth.

‘As a rule the only mantra used in this sadhana is that of the Mother or of my name and the Mother. The concentration in the heart and the concentration in the head can both be usedβ€”each has its own result. The first opens up the psychic being and brings bhakti, love and union with the Mother, her presence within the heart and the action of her Force in the nature. The other opens the mind to self-realisation, to the consciousness of what is above mind, to the ascent of the consciousness out of the body and the descent of the higher consciousness into the body.’

‘In this Yoga there is no fixed mantra, no stress is laid on mantras, although sadhaks can use one if they find it helpful or so long as they find it helpful. The stress is rather on an aspiration in the consciousness and a concentration of the mind, heart, will, all the being. If a mantra is found helpful for that, one uses it. OM if rightly used (not mechanically) might very well help the opening upwards and outwards (cosmic consciousness) as well as the descent.’

Most sadhaks in this yoga simply call the Mother as ‘Maa Maa Maa Maa Maa Maa Maa’ with profound effect not only on the sadhak’s inner state but also in providing protection during distress due to outer or inner reasons.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
