When I observe the people here in the village and in my immediate surroundings, I feel that humanity is not yet ready. They exist in such a low state of consciousness—spending their entire days preoccupied with the affairs of others, and even deriving pleasure from the suffering of others. Money alone remains the sole center of their existence. Witnessing this, I wonder: will even a cataclysm be enough to awaken them? Or, even after a catastrophe, might they simply begin thinking, “We survived; now let us go back to rebuilding our empire”? Viewed objectively, we humans are still asleep; how, then, is this evolution to proceed, and what will be its process? Will more liberated souls descend in the future to uplift them?
Or will it begin with a very select few—perhaps just a hundred or two hundred individuals—who, by the grace of the Divine Mother, will carry this evolution forward?
What you write about the general condition of humanity is very true. The Mother has foreseen and revealed what future might await this recalcitrant, often perverse layer of humanity. Collapse into the animal type, changing fitfully under the pressure of crashing circumstances, – everything is possible. But what is also becoming evident is a growing number of human beings who are seeking for a new Light, who are turning towards the Divine in their own way. These are the ones who are getting prepared for the New Creation. Besides these there are a few, still very few, who are ready to go through anything it takes but seek nothing else but the next future whose doors have been opened by Sri Aurobindo. They are experiencing varying degrees of the transformative changes and the challenges within themselves. They carry the seeds of the future and are moving towards the New Creation. Their numbers are slowly growing and will so continue for another 50 to 100 years and then the demarcation will begin. The Mother has described this in one of her conversations thus.
‘This consciousness here must consciously connect with that consciousness there, which means a multitude of stairs passing from one to the other. Then we will be able to rise up progressively, and the whole will arise.
Its action will be somewhat similar to what is described in the Last Judgment, which is an entirely symbolic expression of something that makes us discern between what belongs to the world of falsehood which is destined to disappear and what belongs to this same world of ignorance and inertia but is transformable. One will go to one side and the other to the other side. All that is transformable will be permeated more and more with this new substance and this new consciousness to such an extent that it will rise towards it and serve as a link between the two but all that belongs incorrigibly to falsehood and ignorance will disappear. This was also prophesied in the Gita: among what we call the hostile or anti-divine forces, those capable of being transformed will be uplifted and go off towards the new consciousness, whereas all that is irrevocably in darkness or belongs to an evil will shall be destroyed and vanish from the Universe. And a whole part of humanity that has responded to these forces rather too … zealously will certainly vanish with them. And this is what was expressed in this concept of the Last Judgment.’
