AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER

Before I turned to Sri Aurobindo, I was very much satisfied with the ascetic view of life and felt that it was the ultimate view of life. I was very much convinced by their arguments about the world. Even the scriptures like the Gita seemed to be suggesting that ultimately, renouncing everything is the only way out. πŸ˜ŠπŸ™πŸ»πŸͺ·πŸ”₯[…]

But after reading Sri Aurobindo, it felt like he is bringing to us the Truth that saves and not the truth that slays. So now whenever I hear anything about the same Mayavadi viewpoints, I just can’t tolerate it anymore. So my question was how to know if I am becoming a fanatic or if it’s a genuine feeling?

It is a genuine feeling as far as your own spiritual evolution is concerned. One can also understand the anguish that every lover of India and humanity feels when we realise that, whatever good the ascetic approach towards the supreme Reality did, its prominence in Indian thought did lead to a decline of the evolutionary Energy in the race, a decline of the immense creative potential and progress that we once made.

However, one has to understand and accept that asceticism is one of the approaches that a person may take for oneself. The problem is when one tries to make it a national ideal, an ideal which anyways was never meant for humanity at large but only for the few who felt the calling. However modern mind is rejecting this actively because it leaves a big gap in our understanding of the link between the Creator and the Creation, as well as doesn’t fulfil the deepest quest and aspiration of mankind for a divine perfection here in the world.Β

At the same time a many human beings so deeply sunk into desires do need a phase of asceticism. It is still the rare who can start with tyaga (inner renunciation) while being completely in the world, though not of the world.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
