AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Is drinking small quantities of alcohol really that bad? Most people I know consume alcohol in some measure. I noticed that the ones who quit it completely face backlash from Society. For example, I heard business people say that you can’t trust a person who doesn’t drink. 🥂💬🍸🎶[…]

I wonder what is behind this seemingly absurd assertion? Am I a little too extreme in my attitude of completely shunning alcohol? Perhaps one glass of wine can be used once in a while?

It is not a question of good or bad from a moral point of view. But drinking alcohol is certainly harmful for the physical, as well as psychological and I would even say spiritual health. The list of physical problems is too long and generally too well known to elucidate. There is no important organ that it does not damage in some way. Psychologically, it is high on the list of risks of dependence, especially in Indians, due to genetic vulnerability. Besides the lowering of guard and triggering of mood disturbance and loss of impulse control are all well-known effects. Spiritually, it harms by disturbing the brain control mechanisms and making one disinhibited in speech and actions.

In general, it has been well established that drinking alcohol is not a good habit. Social drinking can anytime turn towards dependence.

I am surprised that in today’s times it is still considered as some kind of a status symbol. Most developed societies now do not insist on it, unlike the late twentieth century. In any case, people should be left free in their choices. Making drinks obligatory is nothing short of compulsory evil.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Namaste Alok da. I was reading the ‘Bhawani Mandir’ under Vandemataram, where Sri Aurobindo said, “We will therefore build a temple to the white Bhawani, the mother of strength…” and said that the mandir would be built away from the modern cities, etc. Did he mean to build the physical mandir? And if so, was it built? Or is it more in the subtle space over India? Please could you shed some light? 🛕🗺️😊🙏🏻🌸

Here is what Sri Aurobindo himself said (in third person) when asked about the idea of Bhawani Mandir. …
