Reading Sri Aurobindo suggests that work without a grasp of its central principle becomes hollow form, prompting me to ask: what is the true spiritual significance and function of Sri Smriti in the Mother’s larger work, and should it even be judged by outer numbers? Only by clarifying this deeper “why” can the right practical direction and inward measure of effort emerge, for which I would be grateful for your guidance.
Relics have always been regarded as objects that exude both love and power of those who held them, divya avashesh. They are not Smriti, objects of Remembrance, but objects of worship to be approached with reverence. Modern mind has lost this understanding and treats these objects of divine value at best with a passing curiosity. It is necessary to educate the visitors about each and every object so as to connect it with the history of its contact and use by the Divine. The place and arrangement should exude beauty. These are conscious objects, to say the least. A little brochure or writing on what do the Relics mean would be very helpful. They should ideally not be part of a building but in a separate area built specifically for this purpose.
However, we must always remember that in our age, very few have a psychic sensitivity to understand the significance and importance of Relics. It will always have a very special place for one blessed with bhakti, which is always very rare.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
