The general advice of staying with one guru and the path he has shown is to prevent the seeker from falling into the trap of forces that come to lure and convert using dubious means including feigning as a Master. It also serves as a caution against mixing of different paths that may pull the seeker in different directions and create confusion through mixed influences.

However the fundamental truth remains that the deepest truth of spiritual life is the soul’s journey to the Divine. The path through which this journey is taken opens depends upon the soul’s deepest aspiration. The mantra becomes the connecting thread that keeps us connected with the Master even as faith becomes the light that leads.
Seen thus, a change of guru, path and the mantra is simply the sign of an expanding aspiration and faith. It is the ascension of aspiration that necessitates the Divine coming to the seeker in a new form that is more appropriate to the disciple’s growing aspiration. This happens to quite a few persons especially so with Sri Aurobindo because he has planted a new spiritual possibility, a new aspiration upon earth and there are souls that are evolved to a point where they seek to go beyond the limited possibility offered traditionally and seek the greater and more complete truth. This happens with all the Avatars and this is what we are witnessing now with Sri Aurobindo.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
