AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Having read high praise of Kautilya’s Arthashastra and the Mauryan rajyavyavastha in my Guru’s writings—where he even equated the inner spirit of the Gita with the Arthashastra—I wondered if Sri Aurobindo ever commented on this text.📜🏛️📚🙏[…]

Given his vast expositions on the Vedas, Upanishads, and Dharmashastras, it feels natural that he would have addressed Kautilya’s statecraft. Could you share any passages or insights where Sri Aurobindo evaluates Kautilya or the ideas in the Arthashastra?

Sri Aurobindo did comment on Kautilya (aka Chanakya) in his writings on the Mahabharata as well as the Foundations of Indian Culture. The essence of it is as follows.

Kautilya is no doubt among the great names in ancient Indian polity, brilliant in planning and organising a kingdom. But his ideas are suited best to Monarchies. It is difficult to adapt them to the modern conditions of democracies.

Secondly, his ideas appeal and apply much more to the intellectual humanity. It minimises the role of the Kshatriya impulse, of chivalry and an uncalculating sacrifice.

Sri Aurobindo preferred the subtler dharma-based politics of Vyasa and the yet subtler statecraft of Valmiki.

He has elaborated these ideas in his notes on the Mahabharata that run into several pages.

Affectionately,

Alok da

Namaste Alok Da. I want to learn about the Typal Beings. What are they, and when did the typal beings appear in the Involution or Creation process? Were they created after the 4 fallen Emanations (Consciousness or Light; Life; Love or Beatitude; and Truth), as the 4 Emanations fell, as the Mother took the plunge; or after creation and during the evolutionary process? 🌌⚔️✨🙏[…]

The typal beings are not evolutionary. They are fixed to type. The gods, the titans, the beings of the mid-worlds are all typal beings.

Creation began with the first four emanations (Sat-Chit-Tapas-Ananda). These are the four original aspects of the Divine. Each being an aspect of the Divine acted in complete freedom sharing the absoluteness of the Divine. But this very sense of absolute freedom led to their being ‘apparently separated’ from the Divine Origin. There could never be any real separation. But each perceived the sense of absolute power as if independent of the Origin…

After terrible situations and traumas continuously, I have now turned completely against the divine and everything that stands for him. I hate everything about him, He is non-existent to me. He is nothing but an absentee landlord. 🌑🕯️🙏[…]

I can understand your anger towards the Divine because you have faced certain difficulties and challenging situations and circumstances. I am not sure if the mere act of turning against the Divine will help. If there is, as you believe an omnipotent Manichean God who inflicts sufferings then isn’t it better to simply try to sort out things with your own inner understanding and strength rather than open another front against the Divine. And if, …

I am 41, unmarried, and dealing with schizophrenia, but I struggle deeply with an ongoing habit of watching lesbian pornography for brief moments once or twice a week. Fully aware that this lower impulse contradicts the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, I fear falling into an asuric nature like Virochana or Shankhachuda. 🕊️💪🌸🙏[…]

I understand your difficulty which grips many persons. It takes time but with a persistent will and faith, especially opening yourself to the Mother’s Grace seeking Her help in conquering it, you will surely be able to get rid of it one day. Meanwhile keep your focus mainly on the positive side of the Sadhana such as cultivating Peace and …
