Does the Moon actually play an essential, vital role in plant growth and life comparable to the Sun and Agni, or is this description meant to be understood symbolically?
At the spiritual level, the Moon is a symbol of Soma, the delight that runs as sap in all creation. Physically, the Moon influences the mind and especially the plants. In fact, it is now well documented that during the bright phase, the Moon helps the skyward growth of the plants, whereas during the dark phase it helps the growth of roots. That is why the Moon has an importance in the Ayurveda as well as certain cultural practices.
