I wonder what is behind this seemingly absurd assertion? Am I a little too extreme in my attitude of completely shunning alcohol? Perhaps one glass of wine can be used once in a while?
It is not a question of good or bad from a moral point ofΒ view. But drinking alcohol is certainly harmful for the physical, as well as psychological and I would even say spiritual health. The list of physical problems is too long and generally too well known to elucidate. There is no important organ that it does not damage in some way. Psychologically, it is high on the list of risks of dependence, especially in Indians, due to genetic vulnerability. Besides the lowering of guard and triggering of mood disturbance and loss of impulse control are all well-known effects. Spiritually, it harms by disturbing the brain control mechanisms and making one disinhibited in speech and actions.Β
In general, it has been well established that drinking alcohol is not a good habit. Social drinking can anytime turn towards dependence.
I am surprised that in todayβs times it is still considered as some kind of a status symbol. Most developed societies now do not insist on it, unlike the late twentieth century. In any case, people should be left free in their choices. Making drinks obligatory is nothing short of compulsory evil.Β
Affectionately,
Alok Da
