AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Is there any difference between the Mother’s Music and Sunil da’s Music? 🎼

The Mother’s music is a bringing down of the higher forces that come down at Her call to do what She has called them for. Here is what Sri Aurobindo writes about the Mother’s music:

‘It is not by knowledge of music that the understanding [of the Mother’s music] comes; nor is it by effort of the mind—it is by becoming inwardly silent, opening within and getting the spontaneous feeling of what is in the music.

*

I feel within me a tendency for music, but I understand nothing of harmony, tune and rhythm. Yet sometimes when I hear the Mother’s music, I am spellbound and lose all sense of time.

It is not necessary to have technical knowledge in order to feel what is behind the music. Mother of course does not play for the sake of a technical musical effect, but to bring down something from the higher planes and that anyone can receive who is open.’

Sunil da’s (Sunil Bhattacharya) music is inspired by The Mother, wherein he became an instrument of The Mother to bring down the higher music under Her inspiration. This is what The Mother said about his music:

‘Do you know that Sunil has done some music for Savitri, and he is going to play it for me in early July. I don’t think he wants to have an audience, it’s quite private, because it must be played only in 1968—in February ’68—and he will show me just a small piece to see if it’s all right. But I thought you would be interested. I’ll leave my windows wide open.

I like what he does very much.

Oh, not just once but very often, while listening to his music, a door is immediately opened onto the region of universal harmony, where you hear the origin of sounds, and with an extraordinary emotion and intensity, something that pulls you out of yourself (gesture of abrupt wrenching). It’s the first time I’ve had this while listening to music—I myself have it when I am all alone. But I never had it while listening to music, it’s always something much closer to the earth. Here, it’s something very high, but very universal, and with a tremendous power: a creative power. Well, his music opens the door.’

So we can say that The Mother’s music is the Divine playing the music, whereas Sunil da’s music is the Divine playing the music through Her prepared human instrument.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Now that you have understood that it is humility that opens the doors to knowledge. In fact when the mind becomes quiet then true knowledge begins to step in as sunlight enters a dark room lit with a candle and we begin to see everything afresh and new.
