AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Sri Aurobindo wrote about the Vedas, Upanishads, Ithihasas, Kalidas. Did He mention about Devi Bhagavadam? If not, why? If so, where? Which context? What is His say on that? 😊🙏🏻🌻🔥[…]

He didn’t take up any of the Puranas in detail apart from quoting here and there. He (and the Mother) held the Srimadabhagawatam in high regard. Sri Aurobindo also regarded the Vishnu Purana as a scripture rich in occult and spiritual knowledge. He wrote something on the Puranas in general and held the Devi Bhagavadam and Chandi path as profound scriptures. If you see closely the chapter on four aspects of the Divine Mother and the mantra of the Mother, he gave are all pointers to how he, in a way, upgraded the Devi Mahatmya to another level.

(Follow-up Question:)

What do you mean by your words? Devi Bhagavadam is a profound scripture. Profound stands for what character of the scripture?

By profound, I mean a deep, fundamental Truth that seems to be missed, or at least not fully developed in the Upanishads, the Truth of the Divine Mother, of Shakti, of creation. Shakti is not just Prakriti or even Maya. Both are Her lesser terms and movements. It fills the missing pieces in the puzzle of creation and the gap in our understanding of the relation between the Self and World.

(Follow-up Question:)

Which Ambha Stotra among our Sanskrit Scriptures is closely a stotram for The Divine Mother shown by Sri Aurobindo? There are many – Lakshmi Sahasranamam, Lalitha Sahasra, Nama Lalitha Trisati -Which one is direct for The Divine Mother?

Lalitha Sahasranam is the closest.

(Follow-up Question:)

So you mean to say Devi Bhagavadam, gives complete, ultimate  concepts and the Power of The Prakruthi Tatwam. Otherwise The Entire Field of Manifestation belongs To The Divine Shakthi, without which Nothing other than  सत् remains manifested. Please see the following sloka:

“शिवः शक्त्या युक्तो यदि भवति शक्तः प्रभवितुं न चेदेवं देवो न खलु कुशलः स्पन्दितुमपि । अतस्त्वामाराध्यां हरिहरविरिञ्चादिभिरपि प्रणन्तुं स्तोतुं वा कथमकृतपुण्यः प्रभवति ॥१॥”

Literal Meaning: “Shiva becomes capable of creating the Universe, only when united with Shakti. Otherwise, He is incapable of even stirring without Shakti. How then can one who has not acquired merit either in this and/or previous births worship You (Shakti) or even praise You who is adored even by Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma and others.”

Does Devi Bhagavadam speak about the Supreme Brahma Shathi? The first and The Highest Shakthi before creation?

Yes, it hints about the Supreme Shakti who has become the Shakti even of the gods, devatmashakti.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Sir, you have quoted “Ahimsa Paramo Dharma” incorrectly. That is not for Gods/Deities. It is a foundational principle for normal people to follow to attain Moksha. It’s not at the cost of other values. Most of the Vedic Gurus discredit this line of thought(from Shraman padhatti). It’s sad but true. 🥸🕊️🪷🌄

I am not sure how this impression came across that this saying is about gods and deities. It is indeed, as you say, one of the main foundational principles of Sanatana Dharma, yet one of the least understood as far as its practice is concerned. …
