AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

We recently met on Mother’s departure day. I have been listening to a lot of your speeches and found something twice I dint understand or confused about. Something about being very strict with dietary restrictions was mentioned. I have turned vegetarian when I was 15 and never looked back. What I dint understand was whether we follow a god/ guru or not, having principles, values in our lives (like being a strict vegetarian in this case) is not a bad thing right? πŸ²πŸ›πŸ₯—πŸ°

And this is one of the things I don’t quite understand that even they give meat to the kids in the Ashram school. For me, killing a living being just to eat, feels wrong on every level,no matter the circumstance. I know my mind is limited but there are things that I’m not able to agree on, no matter how much I think. Wanted you to throw some light on this.

I am happy that you asked this genuine doubt.

Let us go step by step about it.

Do The Mother and Sri Aurobindo encourage taking non-vegetarian food?
No and a clear No.

Do they stop people from taking Non-vegetarian food or impose any dietary restrictions for those who undertake Yoga? The only restriction they have adviced from the dietary point of view is alcohol, smoking and drugs of abuse.

How did they look at the value of food with regard to its effects upon man?
The most important elements are the occult atmosphere in which it is cooked and eaten. There is also the value of food in terms of the three gunas. Thus, for example onion is tamasic, meat and spicy food are both rajasic, fruits and milk are sattwic. Sattwic food is ideal.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
