Please help understand below (from chapter ‘Equality’, page 191-192) in the right context:” Our secret soul takes a pleasure in this strife and effort, and even a pleasure in adversity and suffering, which can be complete enough in memory and retrospect, but is present too behind at the time and often even rises to the surface of the afflicted mind to support it in its passion; but what really attracts the soul is the whole mingled weft of the thing we call life with all its disturbance of struggle and seeking, its attractions and repulsions, its offer and its menace, its varieties of every kind.”πŸ—οΈβœ¨πŸ”’β€οΈ

This was a puzzling part in the chapter. Some questions that arose in the mind: Is the ‘secret soul’ here referring to the Psychic Being?Β Is the ‘pleasure in adversity’ and the attraction of soul in ‘whole mingled weft of the thing we call life’Β  due to the developmental opportunities for the psychic being or the divine enjoying the unfolding?Β What’s the context of ‘memory and retrospect’? There are mentions of ‘Desire-soul’ and ‘bliss-soul’ in this chapter and thus it is a bit confusing to understand what these are and their difference from ‘secret soul’.

Yes the secret soul is the psychic being.

The pleasure in adversity is not necessarily only for the opportunity of progress it provides but the extreme delight that follows or even runs behind in the course of an extreme adventure. For example people strive for conquering mountains or extreme sports because of the joy that one experiences in the process while passing through danger and difficulty. Similarly the souls takes these extreme situations and the experiences they provide as a ‘strengthening wine.’ That is the spirit in which the kshatriya warrior, the knight, the samurai fight a battle sporting with death and danger. It is an indispensable stage in the soul’s growth.

In memory and retrospect is when we look behind and laugh at an adversity or a danger we have escaped or a difficult situation that has been averted. During the phase it could be very challenging but later on when things have eased out then we often look back at those moments with a smile and a twang of joy for having successfully navigated through the seemingly impossible situation.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

I’m curious to know what place Sri Aurobindo would have given to Personality Classifications like Myers-Briggs, Socionics, etc. I understand that he spoke of psychoanalysis as an incomplete and partially ignorant tool of understanding the mind. πŸ“–πŸ§‘β€πŸ€“πŸ“š[…]

There was a time, long back, when I read many of these things. Found all of them not only grossly inadequate and limited but also missing the core of human nature, the person behind the personality. It is very much like the story of blind men searching for the elephant in the room and drawing their own conclusions about what the elephant likely is.

If a person is elevating their consciousness and developing themselves into a new consciousness, what about those who have already attained Liberation (Mukti) and have become one with the Supreme Being? Identifying with the Supreme Being is rare. What is generally called as Mukti is departing from the cycle of birth and death into a state of Silence or Nirvana and then merging or losing all one’s individual truth that the….

Sir, the main problem with depressive medicines is that they make the body and mind always sleepy, dull and lethargic. To be honest, I don’t actually know as to how and where to progress on the Spiritual path and in Studies. Even the simplest of things, I am finding it difficult to face off. Really don’t know what to do ahead.πŸŒ§οΈπŸ§‘β€βš•οΈπŸ’ŠπŸ«

This was true of earlier medicines. But now there are much safer medicines with fewer side effects if any especially of drowsiness. There is nothing wrong in taking them and bounce back on your feet in a few weeks at …
