AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

My question is, is it right or wrong to celebrate someone’s birthday after their death? If so, why is this so? And did Mother say anything about this kind of debt in the Ashram, or is this all just something we made up?πŸ•ŠοΈπŸŽ‚βœ¨πŸŽˆ

What is meant by living and what is meant by dead. There are many who are living but whose life is so meaningless, so purposeless and self-centred that they are as good as dead except for their little circle of family and friends. There are others, few and rare, whose life is an example and continues to impact the world even after they have departed. They continue to live in the thoughts and the heart and memory of people.

But whether to celebrate their birthday or not is a question of personal sentiment. If someone feels grateful, continues to draw inspiration and strength from the so-called departed, then a birthday remembrance can be a way to express their feelings but also to draw their influence closer, if they continue to live after departing from the earthly plane.

These are personal things and there is no need to enforce it on anyone whether for the living or the departed. In the Ashram it is only the birthday of the ever living Sri Aurobindo and the Mother is observed. But nothing is enforced and each one is left free to celebrate the birthday of someone who has departed or not. It is a personal choice.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Dada, how to stop thinking? I mean, continuous thoughts are coming and going regarding useless things. Sri Aurobindo has said we have to watch thoughts and not attach any importance to them, but how should we do that? Or how to calm our minds and think about our Master’s only?🌊πŸŒͺοΈπŸ€―πŸƒπŸ§

While stopping of thoughts completely is not an easy thing, it is very much possible to direct the flow consciously towards an object. Thus, you can consciously let your thoughts run around the idea of God, or of a Divine…

Kindly let me know if the understanding below is incorrect: As SAT, CHIT, and ANANDA are the 3 aspects of PARABRAHMAN, meant for the manifestation in our universe, so are the infinite other aspects of PARABRAHMAN meant for the manifestation in many other universes. Sat, Chit-tapas, Ananda are the three principle aspects. All other aspects such as Peace, Wisdom, Knowledge, Compassion, Strength, Beauty, Harmony, Love are derived from these four fundamental aspects of the One Infinite. Each…
