AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

It is really unfortunate that you are equating the insistence by aging in-laws or parents for wearing sindoor with the practice of hijab & snatching away the girl’s right to education. While the former is not causing any real harm to the women, the later ones are affecting her confidence and restricting growth respectively. This is precisely why I said you were overreacting…[…]

Are you saying we should compromise only when the potential damage involves a large number of innocent lives. Since only 1-2 lives of her innocent husband and children are involved in this case, she should oppose this so-called “EVIL PRACTICE”. As a mother and wife she has some responsibility or not?? Is this practice really worth it to oppose and compromise family ties affecting the quality of life of her husband and children??

I may not be as knowledgeable as you, but in my 35 years of life I have definitely realized that our stance should depend on how wrong and harmful the issue is. I am sure most people on this forum will agree with me that this harmless compromise by the woman is a very negligible price to pay to keep the family atmosphere happy. Of course she can continue to reject this practice in her heart and continue to teach her children to question traditions and release their true spirit by breaking the outer moulds so that desired change takes place with less damage from the next generation.

I understand your point about hurting parents etc. But don’t you think the parents too need to also understand the generational shift which is part of the Divine plan to go towards the future. Shouldn’t they too grow and evolve rather than remain stuck in the past?

If we want to rise as a nation our stance should be on Truth. That is the need of the hour. You are worried about aged parents. I am worried about an ageing nation stuck to the forms of the past that is stifling the spirit of India.

Anyways you are free to hold your opinions and live by it.

People are free to think whatever they want on this forum or another but to me personally truth is far more important than public opinion or pleasing elders. But again others are free to have their views.

I hope you understand that I am not asking you to change your views or to stop wearing bichiya or other marks of marraige. I have responded to a query someone asked me. The person has a right to disagree and discard the view. I am wondering why you are taking up a crusade against me.

I would certainly not advice anyone to practice hypocrisy and duplicity by rejecting a practice in the heart but continuing it outside. In spiritual language it is called mithyachar, to believe in one thing but practice another.

Well, we can agree to disagree as ‘mature’ human beings.

By the way I have not used the word evil for this practice. Nor am I stopping her from following these practices. You are free to convince her otherwise. It is not a question of knowledge but commonsense and maturity which allows people the basic freedom to be themselves as long as they do not want to deliberately harm someone.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

How can one enlighten, strengthen and purify the vital? It is also mentioned that the choice of sensations and their control should be made with a very scientific austerity and solely for the growth and perfection of the vital. In day-to-day life, what would it mean and how should one practice this? 🔥🌱

The vital generally acts under the impulsion of desire and its children ambition, fear, and the rest. The first step in its refinement is to practice equanimity and nishkama karma, that is to say, action done with an eye on perfection rather than personal gains. Next it should be turned into an offering to the Divine within, an act of worship of the Divine. Here is a beautiful hint by The Mother…
