AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Dearest Alok da, On the onrush of universal forces into us, Sri Aurobindo writes about anger, So how does one detect what is about to enter one’s being?🌌πŸͺπŸŒ€πŸŒͺ️

“The fact that the anger comes with such force is itself enough to show that it is not in you that it is, but that it comes from outside. It is a rush of force from the universal Nature that tries to take possession of the individual being “

Generally one recognises or perceives something only AFTER it is entered the being. Is the velocity/force itself a good indication that something is coming from outside, or there any other indications so that we can warned in advance before forces enter us, so that we can stop or reject them decisively and in time? Practical hints will help. Sri Aurobindo says that the power of rejection is one of the great power man can have over Nature and one must cultivate it if one has to do yoga well.

Yes, it is a great power to be able to detect these forces and reject. The first sign, especially of anger is the sense of an inner unease. Sometimes this unease takes the form of a mild sadness like the gloom one may feel with certain cloud formations before the storm. The feeling is so similar before the cloud bursts into a storm. Actually even the strange unease in the sky before the storm coming is similar. At other times it is a state of boredom, a dullness or tamas, almost like a depression. Depression and anger are in fact close cousins. Turned inwards it is depression. Turned outwards it becomes anger. There is another feeling, a feeling of restlessness, a sense of inner frustration that colours our perception. Thoughts of a negative nature colouring everything including oneself bad begin to show up in the mind’s sky such as ‘what is the use’, ‘nothing good has happened or happening’, ‘life is miserable’, ‘I am horrible or bad and so are others’, ‘the world is evil’ etc. The heart feels lonely, sad, unable to love or feel happy. Sometimes it is felt in the body, a weakness of legs, an unease in the pit of the stomach, gentle trembling, increase of breathing etc.

If one is sensitive one gets it very fast right at the sign of unease and mild restlessness or a wave of dullness creeping in. One must reject it, remember The Mother and get busy with some active work. Sometimes just sleeping over helps especially if the reason is fatigue. Tired nerves easily open the door. Relaxing in a quiet atmosphere with some nice music and turning the attention away from oneself helps. Of course one has to address the deeper cause, the inner unhappiness that is opening the doors again and again and address it through inner detachment, calling peace, inner discernment, offering it and turning towards The Mother.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
