Silencing the mind is relatively difficult because it depends ultimately on the descent of the Divine Silence or an ascent into it. What is easier and practically effective is quietening the mind. The ways to go about it are as follows.
1) Practice witnessing the thoughts especially when they assail. Do not judge them but just step back and observe without getting caught up in their flow.
2) Call Peace, Peace, Peace until it comes as easily as calling a friend.
3) Concentrate on The Mother’s Presence in the heart even while engaged in activities.
4)
Try to practice action without an eye on the fruits. Focus on the work itself rather than the results.
5) Pray to the Mother for Calm, Peace, Equanimity
6) Step back whenever the rush of emotions and passions are trying to express through speech. Wait for the storm to quieten and then speak and act under the true inspiration.
7) Focusing on breath without modifying it, just observing it as one observes a stream gives instant results. But long term settled quietude and even Silence comes from the other practices.
The secret of success lies in perseverance.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
