Stories of angry gods refer to beings of the vital worlds, the gods of the vital world mentioned in some of the Puranas. They are evidently worse than human beings in certain ways, especially because they do not have the psychic being, the Divine Representative within them.
But there are greater gods as well who are full of Compassion. Though some of them may seem to have a strong destructive forces expressing through them, for instance, Kali. But this destructive force has nothing lower like jealousy, etc. in it. Its purpose is to destroy darkness and evil propensities.
And beyond the gods, even the greatest god, there is the one Supreme Reality, the Lord and His Shakti.
