Social interactions are best avoided as they often lead to vital interchange during which one often loses much that is gained as a result of the Yoga. Besides, when one meets all kinds of people on the social ground, one absorbs, almost mechanically, often unconsciously, the general atmosphere that human beings carry around themselves. Hence, to a seeker on any path of yoga, these things such as parties, marriages, reunions of old friends, family gatherings, etc are best avoided. The collective life must change and evolve as the individual evolves. That was one of the ideas behind the formation of Sanghas and Ashrams so that the collective life is commensurate with the individual. However, it is not always possible to completely avoid such social events when one is living in the world. In such a case, it is best to practice inner equanimity and to stay away from all gossip and animated discussions. A general goodwill for all, while an ingathered state within, is the best way.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
