AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

Today, I want to ask a personal question and I want to keep my identity hidden, as this is a very personal question that I don’t understand. I am currently in a relationship and my boyfriend smokes and drinks. ๐Ÿšฌ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ˜ฅ๐Ÿฅ€โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน[…]

At the start of our relationship, he told me he was trying to quit, so I thought I should support him. But even now, it’s been 3 years, and he is still doing it. He told me it’s better and he is doing it less, but now I know he is not. I am so tired of understanding him. I really want to be with him and not with this habit and also, he has changed a lot, I mean, his behaviour towards me has changed a lot. What should I do? As I am really confused, should I see Hari in him and be with him?

Smoking and drinking are extremely difficult to quit. Being in a relationship with someone with these two habits is going to be very straining in the long run. In a relationship, one should look for long-term togetherness. Short-term attractiveness, outer looks, etc do not last long. The important thing is whether your thoughts, aims and goals match. And since it is difficult to be clear about these things until one reaches an inner maturity which usually comes by 25, rushing into long-term commitments, marriage, etc are not advisable until one reaches a zone of inner stability and clarity about one’s goals and purposes. Short-term happiness is a different thing. But a committed relationship is best after 25. And if the burden of smoking and alcohol is already there in the very beginning, then it is going to be a bad start. Those who are serious about quitting don’t linger long.ย

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Dear Alok Ji, can you please tell me how I can get rid of my anger at Sri Aurobindo and also how to regain trust in him? ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’—

Trust is a very precious, priceless gift. Even among human beings it is special. But when it is towards the Divine then it should be doubly carefully guarded.ย ย

Again anger is an extremely harmful emotion towards anyone. It hurts and harms both, the one who harbours it and the one towards whom it is directed. But since one cannot harm or hurt the Divine Beings, it falls back upon oneself creating a terrible karma. By all means desist it. It is the straight road to fall…

At one end, aspiration for the Divine and to unite with Him and to have a change of consciousness; to do The Mother’s work; at the other end, need for a proper awareness in the very ordinary and externalised human nature about the deep meaning and implication of what is happening in life and also what the Divine Destiny is. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป[…]

It is much better to catch the knot of life at the other end from where it all begins. The riddle of life cannot be understood on the surface. Focus on the one thing needful, the Divine, and all the rest will begin to fall in its place. This has been the experience of all who have gone on the path.ย

I am reading the Synthesis of Yoga and Sri Aurobindo is speaking about the union having a threefold character (pg. 131). I wanted to understand whether this is a skilful parallel to draw: a union by identity = Atman = Brahman ๐Ÿ“–๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป […]

Here is the passage from the Synthesis of Yoga to which you are referring.
