However, out of a fear of leaving the security of this job, I feel compelled to continue and have been advised to research conceptual metaphors in spiritual literature. Before committing to this doctoral path, I would deeply appreciate your advice on how to navigate this decision given my reservations about an academic career.
Isn’t it an overanalysis and rejecting Grace coming at your doorsteps? Our mind often gives various justifications to avoid certain challenges. To me, it is very clearly the Divine Grace helping you to reach greater heights. To your specific questions, here is my answer.
1) This may sound silly, but if I am not interested in teaching at all, wouldn’t it be possible for me to do something I really enjoy and also still face challenges that can shape my personality and help me evolve?
What is meant by really enjoy? If you know it, you would simply say that I enjoy this activity. There will be no ambiguity. But until we are certain about what we are here to do then should not throw away the opportunities that life presents before us. We should walk with faith, learn and grow, work with the right attitude until we are clear beyond all doubt about what we are here to do.
2) If it is required of me by Ma to go for this career choice, should I really begin a PhD now?
Maa is least interested in a PhD or no PhD. The Divine does not microcontrol us. She leaves us free to learn and grow until we get onto our real business. That real business is about growth of consciousness towards the Divine, discovering our true Self, transforming our nature into something beautiful, strong, high and pure. Outer work is simply a means to grow and express the Divine Truth within us. So, until you are absolutely clear about what we are here to do, we should take the opportunities that life offers us with gratitude.
The topic of conceptual metaphors in Sri Aurobindo is very nice.
There is only one thing. I hope they will allow you to continue with your work while you are doing your PhD.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
