Sacrifice does not diminish oneself. It purifies us of all that is small and low and obscure by burning it in the flame of aspiration. It is offering our being not just to this or that person but in the fire that burns away all selfishness and thereby uplifts and enlarges us.
Sacrifice also leads to an interchange. Thus, when we sacrifice something to someone, something of the person automatically comes to us from the person, even if the person does not want to give. Therefore, sacrifice to the Divine is considered the best and the highest. In human love too, the sacrifice is best done to the highest Ideal of Love or best still to the Divine Presence in the person. Then not only are we safe, but we actually grow.
On the other hand, if sacrifice is done foolishly to the wrong persons and with the wrong attitude, mechanically, so to say, then the result of this sacrifice is only an increase of one’s foolishness. When sacrifice is done egoistically for selfish goals, then it brings passing joys and sorrows. It is only when it is done consciously with the right motive and attitude that it helps us grow in inner light and happiness. But when done consciously, gladly to the Divine, then there are no limits to our growth and progress.
Affectionately
