Driven by an unwavering rejection of foreign dominance, both viewed their motherlands not merely as territories, but as living, transcendent forces with universal missions. This vision culminated in a historic alignment during WWII, when Sri Aurobindo actively supported Free France, recognizing de Gaulle as an indispensable force against Axis totalitarianism. Ultimately, both men represent two expressions of human verticality in times of chaos—one channeling it through statecraft, the other through the evolution of consciousness.
Thanks for the interesting parallels between the spiritual nationalism of Sri Aurobindo and Charles de Gaul. Sri Aurobindo did regard him as a divine instrument in the Second World War. Of course, subsequently Sri Aurobindo went much farther and deeper than the patriotic love and the prophet of nationalism, and became the lover of humanity and God-lover burdened with the Avataric mission of redeeming mankind and the evolution of the new Supramental Race through his Integral Yoga. But even apart from that his poetic and many-sided creative genius went way ahead of any other nationalistic leader of his own or even earlier times. Sri Aurobindo is the precursor not only of India’s spiritual destiny but also the future destiny of mankind.
