AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

My sister is pregnant and has entered her ninth month. Because she has a low-lying placenta, the doctor has recommended a C-section and suggested dates around August 14th or 15th. When I learned about the dates, I suggested August 15th because it is Sri Aurobindo’s birthday. 👶🗓️[…]

After consulting astrological factors like the nakshatra (lunar mansion), the family also chose August 15th. However, I started feeling that what we are doing feels somewhat artificial—as if it isn’t happening naturally. Is it okay to decide on a date like this? It feels like we are imposing our own wishes; initially, I was happy to hear August 15th was an option because of Sri Aurobindo’s birthday, but later I felt that by choosing the date based on these factors, we are making the process artificial rather than natural. So, is it alright to choose a baby’s birth date in this manner?

Trying to find an auspicious date, hoping for a better future through the limited means given to man, stepping back from the first impulse and making rational choices are all part of human nature and hence natural. Medicine itself, as well as technology and all else invented by the human mind, is also natural in the sense that it is an extension of our mind that is given to us by Nature. Animals are driven by vital nature, whereas man makes choices by his mental nature. So when confronted with choices, as in the instance of possible delivery or CS date, when one chooses a date with the motive of seeing a happy future, it is part of human nature and hence natural to man. In fact, it is given to man to make rational choices based on what he believes and hopes to be the best.

Artificial, in the human context, is to project what one is not, to show off by modifying appearances to impress outwardly, such as through cosmetics, luxury cars, branded dresses, makeup to impress, etc. This too is artificial only in a certain sense, for we find examples of this in the animal world, of camouflage, of deception, of putting on a show or dance to woo, etc. However, animals do it, driven by instinct of survival and prolongation of the species. Man does so to consciously deceive, with hypocritical intent for selfish advantages. This is where the word artificial would apply, to show off what one is not.

Having said that, humanity lives in ignorance and he tries to master fate by external means such as dates, astrology, external machinery, etc. But the scroll of destiny is not affected so easily. Fate follows its own course until one learns the lesson and changes within.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

How can i purify my relationship with the Mother? Asking the Divine for too many things seems selfish and at the same time if i make a promise to myself that i will not ask unnecessary things and face difficulties myself seems not the right thing to do. I feel my relationship with Mother is the most valued thing in my life so how do i make it pure.

Surely we can ask the Divine Mother for what we need. Only our relationship should not be confined to that. One should learn to give, to give out of joy, something of oneself, work, actions, money, something for Her Purpose in …

Pranam Sir. I want to ask about how to deal with negative anticipations, thoughts, and expectations in our daily life. One of my colleagues always targeting me and quarreling with me over each minor issue or mistake and even insults me in front of juniors. He is visually challenged. 🌿🕊️[…]

The best way is to completely ignore him, and if you cannot do so then remain inwardly totally indifferent to him. The best response to people who are hypercritical is complete indifference. The more you try to explain, the more they justify. The more you concede, the more they increase the criticism. But indifference completely flattens them…

What does the chant “OM SHANTI” truly signify—is peace merely the repetition of a sacred word, or a state to be deeply imbibed within the heart? We often define peace simply as the absence of external conflict, agitation, or turbulence, but this surface calmness is only temporary and amounts to nothing more than restraining turbulent emotions. What, then, constitutes real, unshakable inner peace, and how can one truly attain and sustain it? 🕉️🕊️

Peace is not an absence of disturbance. Even inertia is free from disturbance. Peace is something positive and powerful, a fundamental foundational status of the Divine, seemingly equal and non-reactive like Shiva bearing and upholding the dance of Kali upon his chest or the ocean holding its tremendous energy by its own power of self-limitation. maryada. It is a state of concentrated ingatheredness like the mountains or a vast Silence …
