In that context, what everyday attitude and actions could make the Divine happy?
It is only the Sattwic people who think of others’ happiness. Most live and think only or mainly about their happiness. However, since almost whole of humanity is driven by the ego and desires, trying to make other’s happy deflects us from our true purpose. In fact, it deflects other’s too from their true purpose. A higher, though still the Sattwic poise is to do what is the right thing to do. Of course, by the right thing is meant not any artificial outer standard but the ethical sense of the true and the beautiful. This itself might unsettle some of the expectations of the people connected to us. But to act in accordance with the Divine Will without any consideration, either our own or others’ happiness, often upsets and unsettles certain fixed equations of life. Yet this is exactly the teaching of the Gita, to do what the Divine bids us to do.
But to do the Divine Will requires a complete trust and surrender to the Divine; above all, not to act for specific results that invariably deflect us. One needs to cultivate inner peace and equanimity, and then, in that state of inner peace, the Divine Will appears in the heart as a quiet, gentle suggestion of the direction to be taken, the decision that is best for us, the road we must choose, the attitude we should keep. The more we live by these indications, the more they grow and the psychic being itself grows. The right attitude is not to have preferences but to keep only one thing as a simple inner signpost. Do nothing that would veil Her Presence. Refer all to Her and think, feel, act with the idea that She is watching it all. In simple words, it means do what you can do easily in Her Presence, in front of Her.
After all, what the Divine wants is to see us grow in joy and peace, true love and wisdom, in one word, grow nearer and nearer to the Divine so that you may realise your true destiny and fulfil the highest divine potential. Just as a mother is happiest to see her child grow beautifully, the Divine Mother too is happiest when we grow beautifully, happily, simply, peacefully, fulfilling our highest divine possibility.
Affectionately,
Alok da
