The story is symbolic, not an actual physical event. Sri Krishna is shown as a child, implying the Divine within us who is growing in creation, the Immanent Divine, the Kshara Purusha. The gopis are powers of nature that have undergone or are ready to undergo the needed purification to become mates, partners of Krishna, to share His delight. Krishna’s wives means souls as well as powers and forces of Nature that have consciously surrendered and given themselves to the Divine.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
