Each child brings his own unique destiny and the line of growth determined by his soul’s unique possibility and a unique past. The role of parents is to help the child, if they can, to discover their own path and support their journey to the extent they can. Unfortunately, most parents want to convert them to their own way of thinking, their own beliefs, goals and ideas of life. The first thing is therefore necessary to allow them the needed space to experiment, explore, discover. Also, we must understand that each generation brings its own shifts in terms of its fundamental faith and will to be. What worked best for one generation may not work for another. Hence, it is best to give them our suggestions when the child is quiet and receptive. It should be backed by logic and reason rather than fixed opinions and viewpoints. Personal experience should be used rarely. And children should be allowed to ask counter questions, which one should be able to answer patiently. If it still doesn’t work, then it is best not to push the point. Pray and leave the child to learn through experience. However, they should know that their parents will be by their side regardless and they are always there for the child should he seek help.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
