Does one really have to wait to grow in physical age to overcome this impulse once it has entrenched itself in the surface personality? If I look at myself over the last few years, I can see clear progress in many areas that are important for spiritual life – the faith, gratitude, inner clarity, peace, equality, wideness in the mind, and many more. These are mainly in the parts that have more or less constant opening to the Mother.
When it comes to lower impulses, I have observed the split-second consent that decides the outcome. When it comes to anger, it has been very effective. When it comes to sex, though, it has yet to be fully effective. I feel I am missing something, a magic lever.
This is how it gradually exits in most people. The higher centres respond and open; the psychic being steps out into the front. But the sexual centre is right at the base from where the impulses hide in the subconscious parts to emerge in a moment of boredom or weakness.
The sexual impulse is like that in almost everybody. It is deeply rooted in the biological instinct for reproduction and has been endowed with an unusual pleasure to make sure that it serves Nature’s purpose of prolongation of the species. Instead of throwing oneself into a severe and unnatural struggle, which often only ends up paradoxically increasing the intensity, it is best to practice samyama, that is to say, self-regulation. With the passage of time (depending upon the number of factors), the impulse gets weaker and it becomes very easy to discard.
Masturbation however, prolongs it, as here the mind colludes by generating images plus it often draws certain elemental energies around, which adds to the difficulty. In any case, one has to persevere with faith and a more and more reliance on the Mother until one day the freedom is granted.
Meanwhile, certain practical ways help in the process of Sanyama. The foremost is to stay busy, so that one is quite sleepy by bedtime. Sex arises easily in a state of boredom. Secondly, one should engage in vigorous physical exercises or sports to wash out the energies naturally and also release endorphins. Reading uplifting books, especially before sleeping, is also very helpful. It is best to inwardly practice inner detachment when one meets people since it is often thrown up from one to another as a contagion.
For the rest, keep offering to The Divine Mother and one day you will be freed from it for good by the Grace.
With Her Love
Affectionately,
Alok da
