AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER

I have another question which is about the Divine will. How do we understand what is the Divine will and whether whatever I am doing is in confirmation with the Divine will🤨? Is inner peace the only indication that my being and whatever I do is confirming with the Divine will?

Normally when we speak of the Divine Will we feel it is about the outer choices and the resulting events and circumstances. Especially we make the mistake of thinking that if we chose outer things like job, workplace etc according to the Divine Will life will be smooth and success will follow naturally. This however shows a certain preference and it is these preferences, often hidden behind our choices that interfere with our knowing the Divine Will. The Divine Will is expressed initially more as a set of attitudes rather than actions. Later the guidance in action follows.

We must be surrendered completely and ready to accept whatever the Divine chooses for us to be able to feel and know Her Will. The Divine may sometimes take us through difficult circumstances and even court danger and failure on the way if such be the necessity for our soul’s growth. That is why it is so difficult to know the Divine Will or for the Arjun in us to find Krishna, the guide because we generally prefer the easier path. Not that we should deliberately court difficulties or that failure is a sign that God is working upon us. We should try to do our best in whatever task destiny has given to us for now but be ready to leave it the next moment if such be the inner need or command. A thorough practice of nishkama karma and equanimity are therefore the best preparation for knowing the Divine Will. Then the Divine Will may rise, in the clear, sincere, consecrated heart as a wave of inspiration which is accompanied by a subtle joy. Or it may be reflected in a quiet mind as a gentle indication. Or it may come in some inmost space in the chest as a gentle nudge that reveals the direction we must take. These are signs that one slowly gets accustomed to read as the heart and mind that have expugned preferences and desires grow quiet.

Inner peace is one of the conditions as well as indication. Inner joy and the strength needed to execute the choice is another indication. Above all, most important is that if we take the course indicated by the Divine we grow closer to and more conscious of the Divine whereas the opposite leads often to restlessness, veiling of the Presence and obscurity.

Affectionately,

Alok Da
