I have not read much about him, but I am aware of this discussion, which I find quite absurd. It is absurd because one cannot discuss an action in isolation. One has to see the inner motive behind it and judged, if at all, against the background of his personality and the life he led with the goals and ambitions he placed before him.
For example, what if he asked for an apology as a strategy just to escape or fool the British system, with the intention of continuing his work! That would change everything, wouldn’t it?
