AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

I have been reading the Human Cycle by Sri Aurobindo and getting very inspired by his references to the old European civilisations. I am at a cross-road where I have to choose a field of study. Society, parents tell me I should choose something practical — finance, economics, business? But I have set my mind on going into Ancient history. I want to do it because of the knowledge alone. I have been criticised for it because I may be taking an unsafe road. All this feedback from others makes me doubt myself. I sometimes feel like I am being irresponsible, and sometimes that is why I no longer want to open up to people due to these social pressures. I have no way of knowing the future, what is has in store for me. Is education for the sake of knowledge itself dead? Is servile education really the spirit of this age๐Ÿค”?

There is a reason why the future is hidden from us. It is so that instead of making a choice based on outer gains and benefits we make choices based on our inner temperament and real interests. It is by taking the challenge of life, by making conscious choices that are in tune with our true calling rather than seeking comforts and money in the name of practicality, that we progress. He who can turn his back to the voices of the world and walks the path indicated by his nature, even if he is the only one who walks it, finds the highest. He who can resist the pressure of the people and remain faithful to his inner calling finds the truth and with it the true success and the inner contentment,  peace and the joy of fulfilment.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

Marraige is a different matter. It requires a deep commitment which can come only if there is some glimmer of true love or else strong earthly bonds of family, habits, customs, language etc. Besides, long distance relationship is very different from living together in close physical proximity.
