Yes, there is darkness, a great darkness when we look at things from the human frame of time and the limits of our sight. But if we extend the vision just a little behind into the past few hundred years or even 100 years, we shall see that a clearing of the darkness is slowly but steadily going on.
In this process, many things, forces, tendencies, ways of thinking and all the rest buried deep in the earth’s and human consciousness are coming out. The snakes that were hidden are now in the open. This is an inevitable process of clearing and purification of the earth’s nature.Β
The hope lies in the fact that there is the Divine Presence hidden within each one of us, within creation. It is the Source of all strength and light and love and hope. We need to start with faith and then proceed towards the discovery of this Divine Presence within us. This will give us the firm footing, the true understanding and power, the solid foundation of Truth for the work.
The other thing is to aspire, to invoke the Light with faith in its living Presence. However dense the darkness, a drop of Light is enough to start pushing it back. Let us, each one of us, be that drop of Light and each such drop will contribute to the ocean swell.Β
Here are some lines from Savitri that give us reason to hope.
‘Because the human instrument has failed,
The Godhead frustrate sleeps within its seed,
A spirit entangled in the forms it made.
His failure is not failure whom God leads;
Through all the slow mysterious march goes on:
An immutable Power has made this mutable world;
A self-fulfilling transcendence treads man’s road;
The driver of the soul upon its path,
It knows its steps, its way is inevitable,
And how shall the end be vain when God is guide?
However man’s mind may tire or fail his flesh,
A will prevails cancelling his conscious choice:
The goal recedes, a bourneless vastness calls
Retreating into an immense Unknown;
There is no end to the world’s stupendous march,
There is no rest for the embodied soul.
It must live on, describe all Time’s huge curve.
An Influx presses from the closed Beyond
Forbidding to him rest and earthly ease,
Till he has found himself he cannot pause.
A Light there is that leads, a Power that aids;
Unmarked, unfelt it sees in him and acts:
Ignorant, he forms the All-Conscient in his depths,
Human, looks up to superhuman peaks:
A borrower of Supernature’s gold,
He paves his road to Immortality.
The high gods look on man and watch and choose
Today’s impossibles for the future’s base.’
