AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

I am seeking guidance on whether to pursue a PhD, which is required for long-term career advancement in my current temporary university teaching role. Although this path has helped me grow, I struggle with a fear of public speaking, a lack of passion for deep academic research, and I often feel out of place in scholarly discussions. 🎓🌱[…]

However, out of a fear of leaving the security of this job, I feel compelled to continue and have been advised to research conceptual metaphors in spiritual literature. Before committing to this doctoral path, I would deeply appreciate your advice on how to navigate this decision given my reservations about an academic career.

Isn’t it an overanalysis and rejecting Grace coming at your doorsteps? Our mind often gives various justifications to avoid certain challenges. To me, it is very clearly the Divine Grace helping you to reach greater heights. To your specific questions, here is my answer.

1) This may sound silly, but if I am not interested in teaching at all, wouldn’t it be possible for me to do something I really enjoy and also still face challenges that can shape my personality and help me evolve?

What is meant by really enjoy? If you know it, you would simply say that I enjoy this activity. There will be no ambiguity. But until we are certain about what we are here to do then should not throw away the opportunities that life presents before us. We should walk with faith, learn and grow, work with the right attitude until we are clear beyond all doubt about what we are here to do.

2) If it is required of me by Ma to go for this career choice, should I really begin a PhD now?

Maa is least interested in a PhD or no PhD. The Divine does not microcontrol us. She leaves us free to learn and grow until we get onto our real business. That real business is about growth of consciousness towards the Divine, discovering our true Self, transforming our nature into something beautiful, strong, high and pure. Outer work is simply a means to grow and express the Divine Truth within us. So, until you are absolutely clear about what we are here to do, we should take the opportunities that life offers us with gratitude.

The topic of conceptual metaphors in Sri Aurobindo is very nice.

There is only one thing. I hope they will allow you to continue with your work while you are doing your PhD.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

I completely understand your situation. Unfortunately it is far too common and a problem quite universally. An ancient saying goes that children of the same family are rarely born under the same roof. The family is a beginning and a base but most of us turn it almost into a goal. Each soul brings its own destiny. Two persons living in the same house need not have the same degree of inner evolution. They may be not only in different …

I completely agree with you and fully understand your need to travel alone, find your own partner and make your choices. It is the right thing to do and is the dharma of the Age. How else will one grow and discover oneself.

But this will be very difficult as long as you are financially dependent in some way or the other on the family. The most important thing you need therefore is to have is financial independence. As long as you depend upon…
