One simple test to know the difference between need and desire.
Desire creates restlessness, especially if there is a delay in its fulfilment. If not fulfilled it leads to disappointments and frustration, eventually anger. Needs do not disturb you even if they are not fulfilled. One simply finds another way to take care of the need.
