AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

What is the step-by-step method to pray to Mother Mirra or Sri Aurobindo? And which book would help? I am exhausted from trying everything—rituals, astrology, meditation, and mantra sadhana. Nothing works, and I have almost run out of money; at 26, I am completely dependent on my parents. Every month brings some ailment—migraines, asthma, or stomach pain. I’ve gone half-mad from taking so much medication. I see no path forward—no idea whom to turn to or whom to accept as a guru. If Mother helps others, why isn’t She helping me? How do I open myself to Her? I have literally no money or friends; my phone and my parents are my only companions. All I have are books by Sri Aurobindo, Mother Mirra, and other spiritual gurus. I even fight with my mother at home, though she cares about me; she has her own health issues. My father suffers from depression and doesn’t go to work, so 80% of his salary gets cut. I haven’t been able to study at all this year; even when I do try, I can’t retain the concepts. What should I do? I have to go to Bangalore again on September 11th. I’ve tried everything—meditation, mantra sadhana, astrology, rituals, and books—but I have no energy left now, nor any faith or hope. Please tell me what to do. Everyone kept telling me to read this book or that, read the Gita, try astrology, or practice meditation—but nothing has changed. After all this, I am in the exact same place I was 7 or 10 years ago. It is a bleak existence—the same patterns, constant suicidal thoughts, nightmares, and extreme loneliness. I cannot go on living alone like this anymore.

Are you not repeating the same mistake by asking for a step by step method? The fact is that reading does not help if we are not willing to apply what we read into practice. Books can at best guide us about what we should do. But the doing part, the action itself has to be done by us. That is what is known as the law of karma. Books, mantras, rituals cannot work on our behalf. They can at best prepare a ground. But they cannot bring a job and put it before you. For that you must labour yourself, search for a job that you can take up and then do it sincerely and regularly. Books can only tell us what should our right attitude during the work or towards the result. Mantras can prepare us to stay calm and have the courage but still you will have to find the right work and do it yourself. Even a doctor must see patients and take the actual practice. One doesn’t become a physician by reading a book. The mantra can give you some courage but the demon of fear is still to be fought by you.

Nor can suicide and lamenting about the parents of any help. It will only complicate things and increase the difficulty. Instead, the first effort should be to find a work for yourself, any reasonable work to earn honest livelihood. If depression is troubling you please do see a physician nearby who can help by way of treatment instead of spending money on rituals and occult practices.

With prayers

Affectionately

Alok Da

“Sri Aurobindo, on the other hand affirms that while suffering and evil are there no doubt, the real purpose of life is a divine fulfilment by progressively embodying Truth and Harmony and Delight. That is our ultimate divine destiny for which the soul plunged into the great adventure of creation.” In true sense, how do we embody Truth, Harmony and Delight in this earthly life? My question is transformation into what kind of Divine destiny?

The Vedas as well as the Gita reveals to us that there is a double nature in man. One is the present human nature that is the product of our material and animal evolution. But there is another, a higher divine nature of which the human is a possible candidate. Truth, Harmony, Peace, Beauty, Delight, Strength are aspects of the Divine Nature which can be acquired by the persistent practice of aspiration, rejection (of the animal tendencies), surrender to the Divine Mother. …

In videos, one often sees The Mother seated while people come one by one to meet her personally. For those who had the opportunity to meet The Mother in this way, is it understood that they go to the plane or world of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother after death?

Yes, The Mother remarked once when a disciple died that She saw Sri Aurobindo’s symbol stamped on her forehead and the great assurance that he gave for all who died in the Ashram would not go through the realms one passes after death. They would come straight to Sri Aurobindo’s dwelling place in the subtle physical world …

Yes, in principle yes. It will be a race of evolved beings who will embody the new consciousness, the new Light that enables them to live in wideness, inner freedom, love, compassion and delight.
