We are always close to people whom we love from the depths even if they be physically far from us. So too we may be far from people with whom we live if love is no more felt. Yes, thinking of someone automatically brings the person close to us, especially if the other person also feels close. Similarly memory of a person creates or strengthens bonds of attachment, for good or for worse. But only the love rooted in the soul lasts forever and goes beyond the life in a single body. That of course is rare, very rare.
