AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER
Ask Alok da

When your parents want you to get married but you don’t, you are not interested or not yet ready for marriage, how do you make them understand🙄? They say, “You are our responsibility.” Even though you live far from them, they worry and say, “Don’t deprive us the chance to perform your kanyadaan.” They are concerned about you being alone, saying, “Life is long, and it’s hard to live alone, especially in these times when bad things are happening to women.”

Well the best way is to address their fears. As parents their concern is legitimate just as your right of choice to marry or not is fully legitimate. The middle ground is to address their worry logically, to show a few examples especially since these days the idea of a commune living is gaining prominence. Tell them about the systems such as health care etc that take care of many things that needed suppoirt of a partner. Also let them stay with you for a while so that they can know first hand how you are managing.  Finally instead of blocking the idea completely you may tell them that you are open to long term friend or partner or even marry if you find someone with whom you feel happy and comfortable.

Affectionately,

Alok Da

The sadhana once begun never really stops. Yes one encounters temporary halts, – almost everyone goes through these phases, but that is because we need to assimilate the gains of the sadhana. Often our outer nature may not even recognise. Yet one has received something but more is not coming in either because the container is small …

Dear Alok da, thank you—the lines from Sri Aurobindo in your email helped immensely, and while old holds haven’t entirely left, they feel looser. I find myself happier in solitude, as outer interactions easily muddle my poise, while an intense inner longing to remain anchored to the Mother, Sri Aurobindo, and Sri Krishna continues to grow. 👩‍👧🕊️🙏🏼[…]
