The first and most important, in fact, the most powerful, indispensable step is nishkaam karma. It means to do whatever work has fallen to our lot, either by choice or destiny, without worrying or thinking about the result. Yet it must be done well, with care and perfection, as a worship of the Mother in an inner state of Remembrance and Offering. If one can just do this and keep this inner state, nishkama karma as well as smarana arpan, then nothing else is needed for the inner liberation.
