While stopping of thoughts completely is not an easy thing, it is very much possible to direct the flow consciously towards an object. Thus, you can consciously let your thoughts run around the idea of God, or of a Divine Purpose in creation, or simply on Beauty and Love. Or the mind may be trained to concentrate upon a single idea, such as God is in all, all is in God.Β
You can also practice concentration in the heart on the Divine Presence.
Another method is to keep some time apart for practicing witnessing or Sakshi bhaav. Observe your thoughts and feelings without reactions. Step back and see the stream of thoughts. Do not judge or flow with the thoughts and feelings. Just see them for what they are. See how meaningless, unimportant, transient these streams are. Then, slowly choose which ones you want to keep and which ones to discard. Slowly, with perseverance, the grip of thoughts will become weaker and weaker.
Another way is to simply call Peace and quietude until peace begins to settle in the whole dynamic nature.
Affectionately,
Alok Da
