AT THE FEET OF THE MOTHER

Reflecting on Gajendra Moksha, a question arose. If the Lord was aware of Gajendra’s suffering throughout, why did He intervene only after Gajendra’s prayer and surrender? 🐘🙏🏻 […]

My present understanding is: 1. The Divine respects the relative freedom and evolving individuality of the being.

2. Prayer and surrender create the receptivity needed for Grace to act more directly.

3. The integrity of the individuality must be preserved during evolution; premature intervention may overwhelm rather than transform.

4. Just as a rigid material cracks under force while a plastic one can be reshaped, surrender creates the plasticity needed for Divine action.

5. I recall your analogy of a man trapped in thorny bushes: the more he struggles, the more he is injured; the calmer he becomes, the easier it is for an external force to help him. Perhaps surrender works similarly.

6. Without sufficient preparedness, could a powerful descent of Grace produce imbalance rather than harmonious transformation, as may sometimes be seen in certain avadhuta-like states? Are these points broadly correct ?

Your understanding is indeed correct. In addition, there is a deeper dimension to it. Gajendra, the elephant king, was Indradyumna in his previous life. After decades of pious rule, he had taken to the life of an ascetic. During his ascetic life, Rishi Agastya cursed him to become an elephant because the ascetic was too dull in his consciousness. Hence the birth as an elephant-king, whence he enjoyed wives and children and lordship over his kingdom until the day when he was caught by the crocodile, another cursed Gandharva. Gajendra tried to fight until his strength gave way, whence he called the Lord. In that moment of distress, he suddenly remembered the prayers and mantras of his previous life. The Lord Narayana, who dwells in every heart, came instantly and severed the crocodile’s head and rescued Gajendra.

The story does not end here. Gajendra receives the rare Grace of Sarupya mukti wherein his form changes into the duplicate of God Vishnu as he serves him in Vaikuntha. The crocodile is also relieved of his curse and reverts back to his Gandharva home.

Thus, seen in totality, the story reveals the ways of the Lord wherein the curse and the elephant birth were simply part of his Lila to exhaust certain animal tendencies and ambition hidden in the ascetic. His fall was actually a catharsis. The tendencies were exhausted as he learnt the lesson of how helpless and alone can even a king, with all his large family can be; the veil of moha, delusion, was removed and he was ready for the paramgati that he was not even aspiring for. The elephant birth was like a catharsis, to clear certain tendencies that were coming in the way of his sadhana and the higher destiny.

I have dealt with this story in one of my talks on the Bhagawat Purana series.

Here is a passage from Sri Aurobindo’s Essays on the Gita that hints at the secret of the Divine Intervention.

‘Thus the figure of Krishna becomes, as it were, the symbol of the divine dealings with humanity. Through our egoism and ignorance we are moved, thinking that we are the doers of the work, vaunting of ourselves as the real causes of the result, and that which moves us we see only occasionally as some vague or even some human and earthly fountain of knowledge, aspiration, force, some Principle or Light or Power which we acknowledge and adore without knowing what it is until the occasion arises that forces us to stand arrested before the Veil.’

Pranam Sir. Since my childhood I always dislike to depend on others. But being a single working mother, I have to depend on baby sitters from agency for my 3 years daughter during my office time. But through cctv, i am noticing that they are neglecting due to which I have scolded and subsequently they have quit. Now also new one behaves the same way. What I have to do in such situations? Please guide.

The solution has to be practical. It is always difficult to find sincere paid workers. Therefore it helps to make it clear to them as to what is expected. It also helps to tell them that you will be keeping track through CCTV. It works as a deterrent.

At the same time you…

I have a question to ask. Whenever I see a movie. I know with my rational mind that it is unreal and just a hypothetical script. But somewhere in my thoughts, it triggers some sort of urge to help the character. For that, I automatically pray to Sri Aurobindo, and it rises in me to help her as if she is a real character.🎬💛 […]

The line between fact and fiction is indeed thin one. What we generally call as facts are what the senses report to us. But there is a whole world of thoughts, emotions, will and impulsions which act from behind and remain unseen. It is this hidden side of creation to …

I was in the process of understanding the mind level- awareness, Inner Integrated awareness or guidance, the soul. I never tried myself to get into the topic of psychic on purpose. Because I was all naturally guided by true inner rhythm. It was necessary before I asked the question. 💛🪞 […]

There are several inner rhythms and only one of them belongs to the psychic. Yes, the psychic being is very much living and conscious. It is living, conscious, full of love and delight, always turned towards the Divine.
